Modern-Day Farmhouse – Beaming With Joy

We’re ready to spill the tea on this home in Ottawa, WI! With a love for farmhouses, this family was on a mission to build their own modern-day spin with plenty of rooms for their four children. Sitting on 52 acres of land, this two-story 7,050 sq. ft. home includes 6 bedrooms, and 4.5 bathrooms, plus a finished basement and 4 car garage. The wrap-around porch was a must-have, perfect for enjoying tea while soaking in the morning sunrise and evening sunsets.

This modern farmhouse is truly something to behold. Greeted with beautiful, reclaimed barn beams and subtle timber openings, the home immediately transports its viewer to an era of luxury! The interior features include intricate detail while still staying true to a classic design, with a wood-burning fireplace that creates a cozy yet alluring atmosphere. The kitchen brings a modern vibe with black painted cabinets, sharp granite countertops, and state-of-the-art Thermador appliances.

A unique feature of this home is the use of a geothermal heating and cooling system that uses the earth’s core temperature to draw heat from during the winter months and cool air during the summer months.

Farmhouse Feature Highlights

For an original look and feel with strong farmhouse roots, Heritage Beam & Board was commissioned to work with JFK Design Build to supply authentic reclaimed barn wood sourced from Wisconsin dairy farms. Areas of the home, such as the ceiling beams, now gleam with a natural wood finish, truly enhancing its rustic appearance. The custom mantel crafted for the fireplace elevates this rustic aesthetic even further! It’s a captivating finish that merits admiring glances whenever someone visits.

Clients loved the look and feel of the reclaimed look so much that they made a last-minute addition to the home, incorporating the reclaimed barn wood into the bar in the finished basement. This inclusion was a pleasant surprise that added a touch of rugged flair to their new home.

What is Old Growth Lumber? Old growth lumber refers to the incredibly dense, sturdy, and beautiful trees that were present before rampant deforestation occurred. These trees were allowed to grow for centuries, creating specialized microclimates and providing homes for countless species of insects, birds, and mammals. Now, old growth lumber is prized for its unique properties and scarcity. Thicker, harder, and more stable than younger growth, it is highly sought after for specialty woodworking, and restoration projects.

Heritage Beam & Board

Heritage Beam & Board has been celebrating the beauty and character of antique wood since 2011. They specialize in using old growth material sourced from the Midwest, specifically milled in Wisconsin. Their team of carpenters loves the challenge of figuring out where each individual piece of wood will best fit for the different projects they take on, whether it’s beam work, flooring, or custom designs.

The company started as a side hobby, where they would take down barns and stockpile the wood until they figured out what to do with it. Today, they are a custom shop that prides itself on creating unique pieces using these materials. There are endless possibilities when it comes to how reclaimed wood can be utilized, including beam ceilings, mantles, furniture (tables, bars, shelves), and flooring. It can even be made into wood tiles, picture frames, or mirrors – whatever the client can dream up!

Looking at what is trending in new homes in 2023, one material continues to stand out: wood. As with recent years, there continues to be a lot of interest in exposed wooden beams, adding a warm, rustic farmhouse touch to homes. Additionally, flooring incorporates unique patterns and textures, offering a more creative alternative to traditional hardwood. As for color choices, homeowners are moving away from stark white, opting for bolder hues that showcase the natural grains and shades of the wood. Finally, art pieces constructed from reclaimed wood are also gaining in popularity, adding character and a sense of history to any space. If you’re looking to refresh your home décor or are in the market for a new build, consider these exciting wood trends for a truly custom touch.
